The parts of your body, to which the nature was not inclined to, a plastic surgeon can be of use. „Worries about small breasts, bigger nose or saggy eye bags are useless“ cosmetic surgeons are saying, while healing inferiority complexes while one waits. Are you afraid of cosmetic surgery? There is no reason why!

We interviewed top Prague plastic surgeon Dr. Hubert Topinka M.D.

Have you watched Nip/Tuck Series?
Only one part of the show. I did not like it, think it scares clients.

Do you think that TV Series or movies affect interests in cosmetic surgery? Perhaps you have more clients for cosmetic surgery?
No, generally we do not have more clients, only sometimes people have some unrealistic expectations after watching the show. For example of scars. There is always a scar after cosmetic surgery, only sometimes it‘s better located, sometimes worse, on more or less noticeable place.

Have you ever had to refuse a client and his cosmetic surgery requierement?
Yes, it does happen in case the expectations and taste of client are completely different from those of plastic surgeon and from the possibilities of the cosmetic surgery as such.

How do you know that you should not be doing the surgery?
It is possible to recognise that at the first consultation. It is wrong if the client is in too much of a hurry and wants to have the cosmetic surgery treatment without all the pre-operative tests as soon as possible.

What kind of cosmetic surgery treatments you do not like?
In case a client comes and wants to loose 15 kg through liposuction. We send this type of clients to a dietologist. She might be doing some mistakes in her eating habits, which she is not aware of, and liposuction is therefore useless. Besides, it is always beneficial to be disciplined with eating habits also for the maintenance of the body shape after liposuction. Liposuction is then a good motivation.

Are there any news in aesthetic and cosmetic surgery? New methods, procedures, materials? Are you in preparation of anything new?
We use natural skin bending, we do not perform the classical scar in the shape of ladder, how it is in general surgery. We sew buried suture, because it leaves less visible scars. I’m constantly improving my kowledge, because there is an increasing number of new injectables, which help to fight wrinkles.

Which cosmetic surgery procedures are the most demanded ones?
We have lots of clients for liposuction (ultrasonic liposuction), breasts enlargement (augmentation) and breasts reduction and breast uplift. Very popular are eyelids cosmetic surgery (eye bag removal) and rhinoplasty (nose reshaping, nose tip correction). Especially nose corrections are often sought-after by men.

Is there any difference when a man is undergoing cosmetic surgery?
Men often underestimate the procedure and the recovery period. They usually do not follow the post-operational instructions the way they should. And then they suffer from more swellings, they have more bruises, basically they heal worse.

Do women bring a picture of their idol? Do they want to look like Jennifer Lopez for example?
I do not perform a cosmetic surgery according to a photo. If a client doesn’t have realistic approach, I will always explain and talk her out of it.

If a client comes to you after many cosmetic surgery procedures and she wants to get back to the original natural herself, is it possible?
With some cosmetic surgery procedures it is possible, with some it is not. Such as lips enhancement can be well revised back.

Would you like to tell something to your potential clients?
Yes, I would like to ensure them, that there is no need to be afraid of cosmetic surgery. The procedures are relatively simple, they do not overburden body, usually there is a good recovery afterwards and most importantly, they are planned surgeries on healthy people, who usually do not suffer from any pain. There is no need to worry about your body, when cosmetic surgery can help you easily.
