Nose Reshaping Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Cosmetic surgery of the nose is beneficial to men and women who wish to improve the shape of their nose and in some cases to improve their breathing. This surgery is available to clients over 18 years of age, takes approximately 2 – 3 hours to complete and is performed under general anaesthetic.

Overnight stay at the clinic is required – usually 1–2 nights, which is already included in the price of your cosmetic surgery package. After the surgery you are taken every 2–3 days for a free check up to the clinic. Minimum stay in Prague is 7 days after surgery, recommended 10–14 days. Our Prague plastic surgeons use dissolving stitches, which are placed inside of your nose and do not need to be removed.

If you are considering rhinoplasty…

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury, or help relieve some breathing problems.

If you're considering rhinoplasty, this information will give you a basic understanding of the procedure-when it can help, how it's performed, and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on the individual patient and the surgeon. Please ask your surgeon about anything you don't understand.

The best candidates for rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon.

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you're physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.

Rhinoplasty is the surgical treatment to modify the size and shape of the nose. By re-modelling the bones and cartilage of the nose, we can achieve a subtle new shape that harmonises perfectly with the rest of the face. At consultation, the plastic surgeon takes into account the overall look of the nose from all angles, especially the relationship between nose, forehead and chin.

If case you would like to have a nose like someone you saw in a film or in a magazine it is practically impossible for any plastic surgeon to create an exact duplicate. If you are obsessed by a minor flaw on your nose, the plastic surgeon might decline to operate on you.

Our surgeons suggest that you rate your nose on a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being the ideal and 5 being the worst. It is possible for the surgeon to improve a nose from a rating of a 5 to a 3, or from a 4 to a 2 and from a 3 to a 2 or a 1, but certainly not from a 5 or a 4 to a 1 rating. For a example, a very large nose can be reduced to a moderate size, but not to a very small size and making a round nose exteremely thin may not be possible. Improvement, not perfection, should be your goal.

Preparation

No special preparation is necessary for this operation; there must be no fresh outbreak of acne on the skin of the nose. The nose cannot be operated on while any inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane is present. Pharmaceuticals containing acetylsalicylic acid (Acylpirin, Aspirin, and Anopyrin etc.) should not be used for 3 weeks before the Nose cosmetic surgery, as they decrease the clotting time of blood.

Operation:

Nose Tip Correction

This operation concentrates on the soft parts of your nose, and takes approximately 1 hour under general anaesthetic. The plastic surgeon modifies the cartilages inside the tip of your nose and he uses dissolvable stitches on completion, thus avoiding the need for removal after healing.

Rhinoplasty

This operation encompasses surgery on both the soft and hard (bone) parts of your nose. It is performed under general anaesthetic and takes approximately 2 hours. Dissolvable stitches are used inside the nose on completion, thus avoiding the need for removal after healing.

Post-operational course

At the end of the operation a plaster splint is put on the nose, which remains there for 10–14 days. If it becomes loose as a result of reduced swelling, it is usually exchanged for a new one after a week. Later on, a cotton dressing is introduced into the nasal nostrils (strips of greased muslin), which is removed on the second day after the operation. While the cotton dressing is in place, breathing through the nose is impossible.

After 10–14 days the plaster splint is taken off although it is necessary to put it back on at night for at least another 14 nights so that the shape of the operated nose is not impaired and so that you cannot accidentally damage your nose whilst sleeping.

Bruises and the initial swelling will virtually disappear within 14 days of the surgery. The nose may still swell from time to time for about 2 months. A final, completely stabilised result may be expected after 6–12 months.

After 4 weeks it is possible to start loosening the skin on the nose ridge with massages in accordance with the instructions of the doctor who performed the operation. Most patients will be able to return to normal life at around 8–10 days.

Rhinoplasty is a straightforward treatment, but some restrictions are necessary, such as avoiding sunbathing and contact sports for the first few months afterwards. The plastic surgeon will advise you as to the appropriate aftercare regime.

How will I feel after the surgery?

You will probably feel tired and sleepy, particularly during the first three days after the operation. You will be given some painkillers and tablets to reduce the swelling. The surgeon will also prescribe antibiotics as a prevention aginst possible infections.

You might also feel unhappy after a few days. This is normal and is caused due to the stress, general anaesthetic, lack of patience with the healing problems, more pain than you expected or the fact that because you have undergone nose re-shaping cosmetic surgery abroad you miss your home and family.

Is the recovery painful?

Many of our clients report they feel little or no pain, however, there will be some discomfort during the first 24 hours due to the cotton dressing placed inside your nostrils which mean you have to breath through your mouth. Once the dressings are removed you are likely to feel some swelling and discomfort, and perhaps some numbness in the area where surgery has been performed.

Possible Risks and Complications

The specific risks and the suitability of a rhinoplasty for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
